Equality Charter Elementary School
The Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club has launched a new program at Equality Charter Elementary School in District 11, serving over 80 underserved Kindergarten and 1st-grade students.
This initiative provides comprehensive support, including academic assistance, enrichment activities, and learning, all in a social-emotional, safe, nurturing environment.
The program aims to bridge educational gaps and foster positive development by addressing program members' needs and expanding our organization's reach to support more children in a new community. We are in an incubation site and will move to our permanent site next year.
Power Hour
Following the BGCA model, program staff assist with homework for one hour each day. This support helps members begin their homework and receive additional guidance. Staff members work closely with individuals to ensure they get the help they need in areas where they may be struggling.
Arts & Crafts
Arts & Crafts provides participants with the opportunity to express their creativity and engage in diverse art forms. This activity supports social-emotional learning by allowing participants to explore painting, drawing, sculpting, and other artistic endeavors.
It encourages each student to express their voice and feel included within the club.
Music and Movement
Academic Support
Program staff offers age-appropriate literacy and critical thinking activities, including read-alouds, word games, brainteasers, individual and group creative writing, vocabulary and sight words, and reading comprehension exercises. The goal is to enhance basic reading and writing skills while fostering critical thinking abilities.
Physical Recreation
Program staff utilize the Boys & Girls Club's Triple Play curriculum to guide activities. Triple Play focuses on three core concepts of healthy living for youth: Mind, Body, and Soul.
-
Mind: Covers Healthy Habits, emphasizing the importance of proper hygiene, recognizing healthy and unhealthy foods, and understanding meal portions.
-
Body: Includes daily exercise challenges such as push-ups, jumping jacks, and sit-ups to keep members physically active.
-
Soul: Focuses on teaching the values of teamwork, sportsmanship, and effective communication.
