On August 14, 2007 an ailing Frederic R. “Fritz” Coudert and his wife Marge welcomed 600 youngsters to their waterfront home in historic Oyster Bay, Long Island. It was the 20th Annual Summer Outing to the Coudert home which began in 1988 with a visit by 100 youngsters. “Fritz Day”, as we’ve come to call the event, is a glorious day of narrated boat tours of Oyster Bay, hands-on introductions to the Bay’s marine fauna, swimming, team games, horseback riding, and a boxed lunch on the lawn.
Besides the many youngsters bused from our program sites in the Bronx, the happy participants included six teenage girls from Kips Bay’s after school program at PS 101, a gifted and talented magnet school, which offers maritime programming in conjunction with nearby SUNY Maritime College. During a six day sail on the Tall ship Unicorn--anchored for the day offshore from the Coudert house--the girls honed their leadership skills under the direction of an all female crew. The sail and all of the “Fritz Day” expenses were covered, as the event is each year, by the generosity of Mr. Coudert, Kips Bay’s President since 2000.
